Slow Down and Pick Some Lemons
Here's a nice video (courtesy of The New York Times) chronicling one Italian family's way of life—lemons!—that is diametrically opposed to the way most food production is handled. Wonderful! We took a trip to the Amalfi Coast last September and it was really the trip of our lives. Truck and backyard farms all the way from Naples to Salerno (and beyond, I imagine). Even our hotel had a garden still producing, so all our food was local, simple and fresh. Cherry tomatoes, basil, olive oil, chunks of parmesan cheese, and fresh baked bread for breakfast. We toured an organic buffalo mozzarella farm and other farms in the area. Lemon groves, olive groves all along the routes. Pomegranites hanging off trees along the roadsides. Pink peppercorn trees. The local people we talked with did not really grasp how wonderful it was, since it was just normal for them. For us it was heavenly!

ReplyDeleteCherry tomatoes or heirloom tomatoes is also good with fresh basil, cucumber, extra virgin olive oil and fresh mozzarella cheese. Very refreshing in the summer time. You can also make it a little tastier by adding some organic mustard, lemon juice, salt & pepper to taste and maybe a tiny bit of dukes mayo or Japanese mayo and maggi soysauce.
